See you at the races

Many people are coming into town for the Inaugural Criterium Bicycle Races next weekend. All races take place Saturday, March 31 and there will be $15,000 in cash and prizes awarded to winners. This event has races for all age groups, even a kids zone with bicycle and tricycle races. In addition there will be two bounce houses, food, face painting and other fun activities.

This event is open to the public, so you can come out and watch the cyclists, cheering them on to the finish line. The race starts on Second Street and the Avenue of Flags in Buellton, only a few minutes down the street from Flying Flags RV Resort. Races will start at 7 a.m. with short courses for different category groups, so streets will only be closed for temporary periods. Be sure to catch the pro men’s and women’s groups starting at 3 p.m.

This event will be a lot of fun for competitors and spectators, with a free cycling expo and beer garden hosted by Firestone Walker Brewing Company. Food will also be provided after the race by Avante Wine & Tapas. There will be something for everyone, so don’t miss this big community event hosted by the non-profit Santa Ynez Valley Cycling Club.

Spring at Flying Flags

This spring there will be plenty of events to keep you and the whole family entertained while you stay with us at Flying Flags RV Resort. Wineries are not only a big part of the local culture here, but they will host many of the big events coming up in our area.

Crawfish season is now in full swing, and you don’t even have to be in Louisiana to get delicious crawfish and Zydeco music. Add some zest to your life with the Louisiana-style crawfish boil, hosted by Buttonwood Farm Winery in Solvang.

This event starts at noon on May 19 at the Winery, and advance tickets can be purchased on their website. The Zydeco Zippers will provide live Cajun music and there will be plenty of crawfish, other food and wine. Visit the Buttonwood Farms website for tickets and more information.

And don’t miss the concert series hosted by Firestone Vineyard in Los Olivos. The series kicks off on Memorial Day weekend with country tunes from the Brant Vogel Band. The concert will go from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday May 25, and there will be wine specials and BBQ meals to purchase, or you can bring your own picnic.

New summer hours for Farmer’s Market

The next time you visit us at Flying Flags RV Resort, be sure to stop by the Solvang Farmer’s Market. Every Wednesday local farmers and vendors come together to sell their certified organic produce, desserts, coffee, beauty products and more.

New summer hours will be 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. due to the Daylight Saving Time change. The Solvang market takes place on Wednesdays, on First Street between Copenhagen and Mission in Solvang. There are also other markets held on different days of the week around Santa Barbara County.

And don’t forget about our newly remodeled camp store right inside the park for any snacks, drinks or small items. And our diner and snack bar is located inside the park for ice cream and other food.

Run the Wine Country

Registration for the popular Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon is now sold out. But if you are already signed up, make sure you have close, cozy lodging nearby the race at Flying Flags RV Resort. We see many visitors from races and cycling events year round, and our RV sites and cottages will fill up fast!

If you’re competing or spectating in this race on May 12, you’ll be able to experience the beautiful views of our scenic wine country and have a great time after the race with the music and wine festival. The weekend will kick off with a Welcome Reception and wine tasting at Kunin Tasting Room, followed by the race Packet Pickup and Expo at Hotel Corque in Solvang.

Enjoy a pre-race pasta dinner Friday night, then the Half Marathon starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. There will be plenty of sightseeing along the race course, and spectators cheering all the runners on. When you’re done, join the party at the Wine and Music Festival from 9 to noon. Later that night, celebrate at the Finisher’s Party hosted by the Kalyra Winery.
